Obituary

Alpha June Huffman, 88, of Troy, Missouri passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024, peacefully at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born on June 29, 1935 in Saco, Missouri, the daughter of Elgin A and Myrtle (Hovis) Hawn. June attended grade school at the Buckhorn School House, and was a 1954 graduate of Marquand High School.  When she was three years old, she met James E. Huffman, whom she affectionately called "Jay", and they spent the next 85 years playing, learning, growing, raising their four kids and loving their grandkids together. They were united in marriage on May 21, 1954, and left southeast Missouri to make their home in St. Louis. This union was blessed with four children: Gary, Darrell, Marcella and Michael.  They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

James and June lived in several areas over the years, eventually settling in Lincoln County in the mid 1960s. During this time, June worked in various fields.  She did everything from washing and pressing laundry for neighbors to selling Avon and eventually working as a seamstress at the Gossard Garment Factory in Troy. Later she was a Certified Nurses Assistant in the emergency room at Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy. June was an expert at crochet and made hundreds of afghans, doilies and other beautiful pieces for her family and friends.  She also enjoyed photography, videography, and technology, and she never met a computer she couldn't explore and then ask the grandkids to put it back in working order. June loved to document family events and her grandchildren's programs and sporting events no matter where it was.  She also loved a good garage sale and would always come home with a unique item to add to her collection! She and James loved to travel, and would visit many places across the United States, with her favorite vacation being their trip to Hawaii in 1995.

Her Christian faith was important to her and she was baptized in Christ at Big Creek Baptist Church when she was 16 years old. While she never imagined it when she said "I Do" to Jay, she became a pastor's wife when James was ordained as a minister in the Baptist Church. Together they ministered to hundreds of people over the years at various churches throughout the state. She loved to sing and added beautiful harmonies to every song, and she played gospel hymns on the piano at home, creating a multi-generational love of music throughout her family. Her true passion was her family and her abiding love for them.  She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

June is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, James E. Huffman of Troy; her four children and their spouses: Gary and Fortune Huffman, Darrell and Terri Huffman, Marcella and David Pieper, and Mike and Lora Huffman, all of Troy; nine grandchildren: James and Christina Huffman of St. Augustine,Fl, Jason and Leigh Ann Huffman of Mundelein, Illinois, Kirby and Jeremy Pestka of Troy, William and Robin Huffman of Norman, OK, Chris and Meghan Pieper of Wentzville, Andrew Pieper and Jamie Ort of Apple Valley, MN, Dylan Pieper and Kaity Charmichael of Troy,  Bradley Huffman of St. Louis, and Amanda Huffman of St. Louis; Twelve great-grandchildren: Abby Flucht, James Huffman, Chris Huffman, Claire Huffman, Carter Huffman, Sophie Huffman, Wagner Huffman, Max Huffman, London Pestka, Eden Pestka, Bennett Pieper and Eleanor Pieper;  One sister, Lois Kesterson of Jacksonville, IL; many nieces, nephews, in-laws and dear friends.
