Bonnie E
Oney
Oct 9, 1947 — Aug 26, 2021
Troy
Bonnie E. Oney passed away on August 26, 2021 at St.Luke's Hospital at the age of 73. She was born prematurely in her childhood home in Winfield, MO, October 9, 1947, to Merritt and Darlene (Zumwalt) Hammett, in an age when such a home birth was a true miracle. She was a fighter from the very start, and anyone who really knew her would tell you that was one of her main character traits throughout her life. She contracted Polio during the Epidemic and as a little 4 year old girl, remembered being scared and fighting for her life in the Iron Lung. She grew up on the family farm and had a simple life and when she was a teenager, would go grocery shopping with her mom and there was a pretty cute guy working there that began making eyes at her. On Tuesday nights, David Oney would work late at Kroger, scrubbing the floors with an SOS pad and putting 2 coats of fresh wax on. One night, he drove by the movie theater that was just getting out, and there she was, standing under the light of the marquis. He turned his car around and took a chance on asking her out on a date. He took her to an Elvis movie at the Warrenton Drive-In, and being a true country girl, came home packing her shoes because barefoot was better. They fell quickly and deeply in love and were married in Bowling Green in November of 1963. To this union, 3 children were born, Lori Lynn, David Allen, and Donald Joseph. They were just kids themselves, growing up together & raising a family. Bonnie was a homemaker, and provided daycare for many other working moms in Lincoln County. She loved every one of them just like they were her own. When Donnie Joe passed away at the age of 15, her grief was so profound, she was lost. Babysitting Jared and Lance Uthe literally saved her life and gave her something to look forward to. By the time they were ready to start going off to school, then came along her grandchildren to look after. Bonnie has 3 grandsons, Mark "Jacob" Tilley, Jesse Tilley, and David Lloyd Oney. She split her time doting on them, flower gardening, and enjoyed quilting & cross-stitch. For many years she grew her garden and canned all the family's food. She was an excellent cook and always made sure you had seconds (or thirds!), and was no stranger to hard work.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law Dave & Violet (Jones) Oney, Sr., her son Donnie Joe, sister-in-law Sharron (McCloud) Lovelady, and nephews Dean & Darren Hammett.
She is survived by her devoted husband David, daughter, Lori Tilley, son David A. Oney, grandsons Jake, Jesse (Sarai Jorgenson), and Davey, step-grandson Christopher Bantz, step-granddaughter Sunny Bange, brother, DeLane (Debbie) Hammett, brother-in-law, Glenn (Jackie) Oney, niece Brenda (Oney) White, nephews Dan (Holly) Hammett, Glenn "Duke" Oney, Mike (Beverly) Oney, many dear cousins, and two special friends, childhood classmate Leota (Creech) Atchley - friends longer than either of them can remember, and Elaine (Teasley) Allen, who became a life-long friend when Elaine's husband Steve barbered with Dave when he opened his own barber shop.
Bonnie will be deeply missed and laid to rest beside her son Donnie, and the generations that have come before her, at Sulphur Lick Cemetery,Silex.
