Obituary

Carman O. Smith, 88, of Troy, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Solace Hospice House in O'Fallon, MO.  She was born July 18,1938 in Russellville, Arkansas to Victor and Dollie (Hogue) Bowman.  Carman was the second of seven children, and she was raised in the south-east Missouri boot heel, where the family farmed cotton. After high school, she married her soulmate, Wayne B. Smith on May 2, 1958, in St. Louis The couple settled in St. Louis where Wayne began a long career with McDonnell Douglas Corp.  Carman worked in retail at the time and vividly remembered riding street cars to work downtown.  Daughter Lisa soon came along to complete their family.

In the early 60's Carman and Wayne bought a farm north of Troy where they lived almost 60 years.  They had wonderful neighbors who became dear friends and they all spent many evenings together playing penny-ante poker and Rook. Carman worked many years at Harper and Row Publishing in Troy, where she was a loyal employee and made many friends.  She had several different roles through the years and ended her career as the payroll clerk.  Working at the book company was  a great fit with her love of reading. Other hobbies included gardening, music and anything to do with grandchildren.  When the grandsons came along, Carmen and Wayne couldn't have been happier.  They attended every sporting event that Matt and Jake were involved in, rain or shine.  On special occasions, which was just about every time they visited, the boys enjoyed eating spaghetti at Grandma's house.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who was cherished by all who knew her.

Surviving are her loving family members: her daughter Lisa (Daniel) Anderson of Troy; her adoring grandsons:  Matthew (Jaime) Anderson of Worcester, MA, Jacob (Lynette) Anderson of St. Louis, MO; two great-grandchildren Chase and Evelyn.  Carman Is further survived by her two sisters, Carol Bowman of Kennett, MO and Joyce Lawson of Plaquemine, LA.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Smith and siblings Ola Juelfs, Harold Wayne Bowman and Dale Bowman.
