Erma was born on April 3, 1933, to Marvin and Susie Mathes in New Canton, IL. Her shining crown was her family. Her happiest moments were during family dinners when she was able to visit with all of them. She loved visits from friends and neighbors as well. Erma was well known for her cooking. She loved it so much that she made a lifelong career out of it until she retired in 1995. No one could top her meals and desserts. In addition to cooking, she loved to dance. She and her husband joined a square-dancing club in the 80's and spent many Saturday nights dancing the night away. Playing cards with friends was another of her favorite pastimes. Country and gospel music were her pick of the music genres, and you would often hear one or the other playing on any given morning at her house. She adored her in-laws and cherished her trips to Wisconsin to visit them. She was the queen of picture taking and snapped pictures to capture any and all special moments. Erma attended New Harmony Christian Church until health issues caused her not to be able to go, but she enjoyed every moment spent there. Erma married Fred Hurd in 1949, and to this union, five sons and four daughters were born. She married Myron Arttus on Dec 2, 1978. He brought one daughter with him to the marriage.

She is survived by her husband, Myron, and her children: Freddie Hurd (Connie) of Bowling Green, MO; Debbie Bufford of Bowling Green, MO (and special friend Charlie); Steven Hurd of Bowling Green, MO; Ronnie Hurd (Brenda) of Louisiana, MO; Pam Severson of Bowling Green, MO; Cindy Stokes (Lyle) of Buffalo, MO; Jay Hurd (Melissa) of Bowling Green, MO; Robin Smith (Clyde) of Bowling Green, MO; Wendy Lindsay (Mike) of Louisiana, MO; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Moehrle of Kinderhook, Il; one brother, Lawrence Mathes (special friend Sandy) of Bowling Green, MO, many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Alan Hurd, Sr., one grandson, two great-grandsons, three brothers, three sisters, her mother-in-law and father-in-law with whom she had a special bond with, and very special friends Fred and Shirley Holmes.
