O'Fallon

Obituary

Reverend Harold Lloyd Hulion passed away on December 31, 2023 in O'Fallon, Missouri. The youngest of nine children, Harold was born in Niceville, Florida on May 6, 1929 to Elijah and Winnie Dell Hulion. At the age of 21, Harold met Margaret Nixon. For him, it was love at first sight. And, after their first date, she knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him. Nine months later, they married and remained married for 69 years. They raised five children together – Nancy, Peggy, Bobby, Jerry and Roger.

Shortly after their union, they gave their lives to Jesus Christ, became born again, and were completely transformed by the power of the Holy Ghost. Harold was ordained by the United Pentecostal Church International. During their years together, Harold and Margaret pastored three churches, two of which they started with no money, no building and few saints. They pastored for two years in Portsmouth, Virginia, 17 years in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and eight years in Edenton, North Carolina. God, family and the church were the primary efforts of Harold's life.

In Virginia Beach, Harold and Margaret began the church with just their family, first holding services in their home garage. To invite people to the church they gave home Bible studies and passed out 20,000 tracks with their sons. They also sold candy and operated a thrift story to raise money for the church. Harold and his sons built the church building together. After 17 years, they left Virginia Beach and moved to Edenton where they soon began their soul winning and church building efforts again. Even after Harold stopped pastoring, he taught home Bible studies and preached until the age of 91 at the churches he attended. Harold showed unwavering trust in the God who could do anything and held all things in His hands. He knew that if God watches the sparrow, He would care for His children.

Harold's faith was a wonderful, Godly example to everyone who knew him. Like the man in Matthew 15 who was given five talents and acquired five more talents, Harold did the best he could with what God gave him. In addition to pastoring churches, he worked a number of jobs. He first grew up working on his family farm. Then as a young man, he joined the Navy during World War II, worked for the Heinz Ketchup company, drove a milk delivery truck, was an electrician, worked at the Vitro company, and retired as a civil servant of the United States government. In his later years, he built and sold homes with his wife Margaret. He could do almost anything construction related. Even into his 90's he did odd jobs for his family and church, including hanging light fixtures, painting furniture, building garden boxes and installing faucets.

When he wasn't busy, he primarily studied the Bible for hours each day while petting his cats. He also kept binoculars close by to watch birds from his sunroom. The early afternoon sometimes included viewing old television shows with Margaret. And, the evenings were ended with the local news. Of course, he always enjoyed it when family came to visit. Though he was a man of few words, he was often clever and funny.

He once said that he would like to live to be 120 years old if he felt good. He made it to 94 years in his earthly body, but will soon live in his resurrected, imperishable body for eternity. He will also be reunited with his love, Margaret, who preceded him in death on December 19, 2020. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be. But, we know that when HE shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see him as He is." 1 John 3:2

Bye-bye for now, Paw. We will see you in just a little while.

His friends, family, and The Connecting Point Church will miss his love, strength, wisdom and humor. His surviving children are Norris Ray Skogstad, Nancy Stuckemeyer, Peggy Varela, Bobby Etheridge, Jerry Hulion and Roger Hulion. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, to whom he was known as Paw or PawPaw.
