Story
Mar 3, 1965 — Aug 8, 2026
Troy
Kevin Edward Story, 61, of Troy, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, at BJC St. Peters, with his loving wife, Joanie, by his side. He was born on March 3, 1965, in Belleville, Illinois, to Jack L. and Martha A. (Tripp) Story.
Kevin graduated from Belleville East High School in 1983. He attended pre-med courses before beginning his career at the General Motors Plant in Wentzville, where he proudly worked for 40 years.
Kevin was a man who found joy in the things he loved most—his family, his hobbies, his friends, music, food, and, of course, a good laugh.
Above all else, Kevin loved spending time with his wife, boys, and grandchildren. He was a proud husband, father, "Pops," and grandfather who treasured the time he spent with his family. He created countless memories that will be cherished for generations.
Kevin had a lifelong fascination with anything radio-controlled. In his later years, he returned to one of his favorite hobbies, flying RC airplanes, and amassed quite a collection. He could often be found working on, flying, or talking about his planes. His enthusiasm for the hobby was contagious, and it was one of the many things that brought him happiness.
The Fourth of July was another special time for Kevin. He lived for creating elaborate backyard fireworks shows that could rival some professional displays. His shows became a beloved family tradition, and in recent years, he proudly passed the torch to his youngest son, Nathan.
For eight years, Kevin and Joanie were also instrumental in organizing SpyderFest, the first and largest gathering of Can-Am Spyders. Through SpyderFest, Kevin made friendships with people from around the world. Many of those friendships became lifelong friendships, especially with his friends from "the land down under"—Australia.
Kevin loved to make people laugh. He enjoyed stand-up comedy and was especially good at his Rodney Dangerfield impersonation. His quick wit, playful personality, and ability to find humor in almost anything made him someone people loved being around. His laughter and the laughter he brought to others will be deeply missed.
He also enjoyed gardening, although his tomato-growing efforts often ended in frustration when the deer discovered his crop just before he was ready to harvest it.
Kevin loved cooking and was especially known for his Italian cuisine, BBQ, and smoked meats—often accompanied by a 30-pack of Bud Light. From 2005 to 2008, he cooked and made pizza-pasta for much of the Troy Trojans basketball team, creating another special chapter in the many lives he touched.
Music was another important part of Kevin's life. He loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. His sons affectionately referred to him as the "modern-day Mozart," a title he undoubtedly would have enjoyed.
Kevin's life was filled with family, laughter, adventures, hobbies, food, music, and friendships. He had a special way of turning ordinary moments into memories and bringing people together. Whether he was flying an RC airplane, preparing a meal, planning fireworks, playing the piano, telling a joke, or simply spending time with the people he loved, Kevin knew how to enjoy life.
He was one of a kind—funny, loving, stubborn, generous, and always himself. He leaves behind not only the people who loved him, but countless stories and memories that will continue to bring smiles and laughter for years to come.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Jack Story; his in-laws, Bobby and Mary Ann Kallash; his maternal grandparents, Charles and Eva Tripp; and his paternal grandparents, Roy and Corine Story.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Joan "Joanie" (Kallash) Story; his three sons, Justin Andrew Story and Ronnetta Thomas, Austin Blake Story and his children, Mikayla and Jesse, and Nathan Scott Story and his children, Brayden and Canaan; his two stepsons, Jason and Sarah Bals and their children, Cora, Luna, and Atlas, and Craig and Tiffany Bals and their children, Lincoln and Quinn.
He is also survived by his mother, Martha Story; his siblings, Geoff Story, Andrea Story-Hilding, and Todd; his beloved "adopted" family, Isaac "Feet" and Bethany Jensen and their son, James, whom Kevin came to love through the friendships created at SpyderFest; and numerous family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, friendship, and unmistakable personality.
Kevin will be remembered most for the love he had for his family, the laughter he brought to those around him, and the many memories he created along the way. His legacy will live on through his wife, children, grandchildren, family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
And perhaps the words that best capture the way Kevin lived his life are the words he chose as his own quote for life:
"Dream like you'll live forever. Live like you'll die tomorrow."
— James Dean
