OT was taught at an early age that hard work was what created the man. Being raised by an older father (his father was 57 when he was born) in the Depression era instilled in him the importance of farming your own land, a passion that he had until his last days. At an early age, he started working milking cows for St. Charles Dairy, even getting up early to work before school and continuing to do so even while attending St. Charles High School. In 1951, Orville met Rita on a blind date where he ended the night by asking in his booming voice, "You got a phone?"; they were married the next year. He was drafted in the Korean War and entered the Army during this time. While enlisted, he and his new bride moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where the oldest of their children was born. After returning to Missouri, he worked as a mechanic at Wilkie Motors as his family grew to include seven more children. He also started his own business, North Star Farms, delivering and installing sod, an endeavor that helped him purchase the first of his many farms. Being a self-made man was a large part of who he was, and he and Rita worked together on their sodding business for several decades. They added one more child to round out the number to nine. Later, they moved to Lincoln County, where he retired to continue farming. Overall, he spent his days feeding the cows, checking on his pastures, and being outdoors. His many trades include being a restaurant owner (JR Diamonds), tractor/real estate salesman (he loved to haggle) and, in his mind, one of the most knowledgeable folks at the farmers' breakfast table at JR Diamonds.
