Obituary

Monday, April 8, 2024, in the early days of Spring, amidst the blooming of the Redbud and Dogwood trees, this earth lost one of its very best.

Shirley Irene Harrell was born December 28, 1954, in Troy, MO to the late Vernon Kenneth "Jack" Harrell and Geraldine (Busch) Harrell. Shirley grew up in Troy, MO and spent her adult years in O'Fallon and De Soto, MO until she moved to Medina, TN in 2019. There she enjoyed the land, the farm animals, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Shirley worked for Yellow Freight and chose early retirement 21 years ago so she could spend time with her beloved husband, Gregory Aaron Stanton, when he retired. They were rarely apart and often remarked how lucky they were to have found each other. They enjoyed gardening, canning, and spending time with family and friends. They also enjoyed going to auctions to buy treasures that they sold in a variety of antique booths.

Shirley and Greg enjoyed traveling together with friends and have had numerous adventures and created many memories; one of their favorite places to go was Keeneland in Lexington, KY. Shirley was extremely generous and very compassionate. She could anticipate your needs before you even knew them yourself and did whatever she could to ease your burdens. One of her favorite pastimes was sitting on the porch talking with friends and family while watching the hummingbirds in her multiple feeders and observing the farm animals graze. Shirley never shied away from hard work and was always willing to lend a hand. She enjoyed tending her garden, caring for her beautiful flowers, and mowing her yard. She was never afraid to try a new recipe from the latest cooking show, and her friends and family benefited from her amazing meals. She loved the color purple, the color of royalty, and those who love and knew her well think it is very appropriate, because that is how she treated us, like royalty!

Shirley is survived by Greg Stanton, her husband of 30 years, son Bryan Carrier (Tricia) of Medina, TN, and son Josh Carrier (Mindy) of St. Charles, MO; and sisters Carol Portwood (Larry) and Barbara Creech (Eldon) of Winfield, MO; and Patricia Harrell of Troy, MO. She has many beloved nieces and nephews, being their Aunt brought her joy, laughter, and great memories. She was a devoted Nana to her three  grandchildren, Clayton Carrier, Trent Carrier and Alyssa Carrier.

While this world lost a great one this Spring, we find comfort in Revelation 21:4, "He (the Lord) will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
